Imagine for a moment that you are at your job, sitting at a desk. Your boss comes up to you and taps you on the shoulder and says, “I have some good news and I have some bad news. The bad news is … you’re fired.”
You think, “Whoa, that is some bad news.” You are also thinking about how embarrassing it’s going to be to go home and tell your family that you lost your job. What if you can’t find another job for a year? What if you do find a job but it doesn’t pay as much?
You ask your boss, “So, what’s the good news?”
Your boss responds, “The good news is that you have the rest of the afternoon off.”
Now you panic, you start begging with your boss, “I don’t want to be fired! Is there anyway you can keep me?”
Your boss looks you in the eyes and then says, “Well… all our jobs have been outsourced overseas… We can only keep a couple people and if you want to stay with the company you’ll have to agree to work one hour overtime everyday … for free. Monday through Friday from 5pm to 6pm you won’t be getting paid. If you did that we could afford to keep you.”
You think about it a little and you agree.
“Ok,” says your boss, “if you’re willing to do that you can be part of the team. For you helping us out during this tough period here’s what the company will do for you. You work an hour overtime for free for two years without missing a day, and at the end of those two years you can retire with full pay.”
Wow, you’re thinking. This just became the best day of my life! Work an hour extra a day for two years and then retire with full pay! What a deal!

You work an hour overtime for free for six months and one day you are at a party. You’re talking with some friends and they say, “Wow, you are soooo stupid. You work an hour overtime everyday for free?! That company is taking advantage of you. Quit that job and go somewhere that pays you for all your hours!”
“No!”, you say, “I only have 18 months to go and then I can retire at full pay.”
